We have worked with Walking Maps to create a number of heritage walks in our local area.
You can view the walks on your mobile phone or iPad, or you can print the map to take with you on your walk. Each stop has accompanying reference photographs and historical background information.
Mont Park to Springthorpe Heritage Walk
This walk highlights the buildings remaining from the Mont Park Asylum complex, which was established in this area from about 1910. Doctors, nurses and patients lived within these beautiful gardens.
Macleod Station to Mont Park Heritage Trail
This walk follows an old train branch line which split off at Macleod station, and from 1911 to 1964 served the Mont Park Mental hospitals which were north west of the station.
Gresswell Hill and Macleod Hospital Heritage Walk
This walk starts in the Gresswell Reserve north of Gresswell Hill near the northern end of the Springthorpe Estate, and traces the sites of the old Gresswell and Macleod Sanatoria.
Larundel Hospital at Mont Park Heritage Walk
The original Larundel Hospital entrance was located where Polaris Shopping Centre stands now on Plenty Road. The Hospital was built from 1910, in the NW corner of the large Mont Park Asylum site.
Bundoora Homestead Heritage Walk
The lovely Bundoora Homestead was once part of the Mont Park precinct of mental hospitals, and was home to sick WWI veterans . In 2020 the area celebrates its 100th year as a public facility.
